Historic Properties of Martinsburg
 
5.    535 W. King Street
Cumberland Valley Railroad
This railroad entered Martinsburg in 1873 from Williamsport,
Maryland, as the Martinsburg & Potomac Railroad. The
Richardsonian-Romanesque style depot of brick and shingle
has a clipped gable roof with cross gables. The depot is
presently used as a restaurant.

6.    101 South Raleigh Street
The John Boyd House circa 1890
This superior Queen Anne house has a hipped roof, corbeled
chimneys, a square tower at the corner of the street, and a
demi-octagonal tower at the facade end on Raleigh Street.
The Eastlake Character of the heavy turned and carved posts
is matched by the entrance surround and double door that
reaches through transom level.

7.    115 North Raleigh Street
Dudley Baptist Church * 1868
This first African - American Church in Berkeley County
was organized through the efforts of Ann Dudley, a missionary.
It was known for a time as the Free Will Baptist Church, Colored.
Note-worthy of attention is the octagonal belltower, dentil cornice
and steep roof.

8.    515 West Martin Street
Ramer Memorial School
This lot was purchased in 1867 for $112.00. Bricks from the
Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, which had been destroyed during the
Civil War, were used to build Sumner School, a one-room school
for the colored. Under the leadership of the principal, Fred R. Ramer,
the present building was completed in 1917. Ramer School served
the black community until 1964. It is now used for adult/community
education and related offices.
