Museums at the Belle Boyd House
There are three museum rooms on the first floor. Two rooms feature the Civil War in the lovely Shenandoah Valley. Many local Civil War artifacts are on display.

On the second floor there is the Belle Boyd Museum and Martinsburg Room. Don’t miss the letter Belle wrote to her first cousin Willie Boyd, describing how beautiful she was at age 17, a display of pictures of Martinsburg on post cards, and a collection of pictures of Belle.

Then we have the Corning Room with displays of clothing dated 1860-1920 and many different handbags. The Lincoln Room researches Abraham Lincoln and some of our well-known supporters. There is a painting of Julia Hill Lamon, daughter of Ward Hill Lamon, Abraham Lincoln’s personal bodyguard and law partner.

There is a World War II room and another room dedicated to other wars, including the Revolutionary War and Spanish American War, and the new African American Museum room.

Across the Hall is a large display on Hack Wilson the baseball player from Martinsburg.

These are just a few of the items that are on display at the museum. If you have artifacts that tie to old Berkeley County that you would like to donate, please let us know.

Don’t miss visiting the Belle Boyd House complex of museums and gardens.

There is also a 51 minute movie on Berkeley County History which is played on request.

THE HERB GARDEN

The Herb Garden is cared for by Don Wood. It deals with both cooking herbs and medicinal herbs, which during the period when both the Belle Boyd House and the Archives Center were built in 1853 and 1856, when herbs were very much in demand. Many herbs were used to treat the ailing and wounded soldiers.

THE ROSE GARDEN

Don C. Wood, curator, had moved his roses to Hedgesville in 1990. After the Belle Boyd House was purchased in 1992, they were moved the following year to Spring Street, in back of the Belle Boyd House. There are now 155 rose bushes, which contain new and old varieties of roses. They bloom from mid May until mid November. Don't miss touring the rose gardens.
